John Szarkowski asked of the photograph “is it a mirror, reflecting a portrait of the artist who made it, or a window, through which one might better know the world?” For me the photograph is both of these things. I see myself in my subjects, however they are only surrogate. My subjects play the dual role of myself and their self, and it’s in this sense I use photography as a way to explore that which I do not know or yet understand while I am also photographing some aspect I do directly relate to.
