FAQS

Where did you get your start?

I first took up photography nearly 30 years ago. What began as humble photographs of friends on the playground turned into a life-long love of visual storytelling though the art of photography. Today I am a published photographer and frequently work on long-term photo stories. I am currently a senior associate lecturer of photography at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay in Green Bay. I also teach workshops to youth and adults and mentor young photographers.

What advice do you have for people seeking a photographer?
  • The old adage, “You get what you pay for,” stands true. Inexperienced photographers will often charge low fees and the images will be sub-par.
  • When you hire a photographer, you do not automatically own the rights to the photographs. The copyright of a photograph belongs to the creator, this means the photographer reserves all rights. Purchasing a print or receiving a digital file also does not constitute a transfer of the copyright. In most cases, it is illegal to make copies of a photographer’s work without explicit permission from the photographer to do so.
  • Do not expect a photographer to send you a copy of everything they shot. As in the movie business, “the shot” was often made during several takes. The reality is this is an issue of trust. If you hire a photographer for any reason, that photographer expects you will trust them to know how to do their job.
  • Respect that a photographer is a working professional. A photographer is not hired for the hour or two you see them with their cameras, but also for the two or more hours you don’t see them sitting at a computer editing and archiving the photos they just took. If a photographer shoots film for you, the process to develop and print from that film took years to master and the paper and chemistry they use is not cheap. Just like you, photographers have bills to pay and families to feed. Often a photographer has years of education to pay back, their equipment must be maintained and replaced from time to time, they also have website and marketing costs to cover and insurances to pay for.
What is your pricing and payment policy?
  • Pricing is estimate only. All prices vary depending upon time, services rendered and usage. Day rate is against space. To maintain a standard of quality, print sales are preferred – a premium will be charged for digital file transfer. Transfer of digital files does not constitute a transfer of copyright. For any usage beyond personal use, a licensing fee will be charged and a licensing agreement must be obtained in writing directly from the photographer prior to usage.
  • A 30% non-refundable booking fee must be paid at time of booking. This fee is applied to the final purchase. The remaining balance must be paid the day of the shoot. A 15% late fee will be applied to the remaining balance each month past the due date. The balance must be paid in full before customer will receive any images or prints.
