Description

Exhibition Quality Prints for Digital Art

When artists create art with a computer or tablet, holding a print of that work can feel like magic. It’s a transformative experience, for both the art and artist, to see the work come out of the digital realm it was created in and be made physical. We know how challenging it is to find a printer able to accurately reproduce your vision onto paper without compromising the color, tones or details. We will work one on one with you to ensure the colors and tones of your work match match vision. And we’ll also help you pick the paper that best suits the work to elevate it into an object.

We have partnered with Canson-Infinity to provide the finest papers and canvas to our clients. We believe fine art is not just about the idea but the material the idea is constructed with as well. That is why we are happy to be working with Canson-Infinity. For over 400 years, France’s Canson Paper has been producing some of the highest quality art paper in the world. Our partnership brings that quality into the work we produce for you. We offer the full-line of Canson-Infinity papers and canvases1 to provide you with an extensive range of substrate and surface options. For additional variety, we also work with the full line of Moab papers and select papers from Awagami, Hahnemuhle and Epson.

Proofing Sessions

We offer a collaborative proofing session to all of our clients. Proofing sessions are ideal for clients who are concerned about the finer details in their prints. We will work with you in person to match colors or tones from previous editions produced elsewhere. Proofing Sessions may be invaluable for clients seeking to produce limited editions for collectors. For details and pricing, see tab above.

Please note, on all orders over $500, prints produced without a proofing session are sold as is.

Process and Quality

Jason Houge Studios uses the latest technology from Epson with their proprietary UltraChrome HD pigment-based inks formulated for long-term archivability and enjoyment. Our workflow is calibrated from digital capture to print to ensure color and tonal accuracy from start to finish. Each paper we use is custom profiled to achieve the most accurate colors and tonal ranges possible.

Print Care

How to care for Archival Pigment Prints
  1. Do not touch the surface or the paper or canvas with bare hands, always wear gloves. The receptive surface is highly absorbent and can pick up grease stains that may appear after printing. The print out will definitely be damaged, without any possibility to erase or blur the stains.
  2. Avoid excessive mechanical stress on the paper.
  3. Do not store, frame or exhibit the printouts until the ink is completely dry. The time spans from a few hours for paper, to 24 hours for canvas.
  4. Storage and Protection:
    • For best results, frame behind UV protective Glass or Plexi.
    • For unframed work, store prints flat in a dedicated print box away from sun light, extreme temperature or humidity level as these can decrease the lightfastness of your print.
    • Do not store paint, varnish or solvent near your prints. Vapors from these chemicals will harm your print.
    • Only use specially designed acid free and archival proof adhesives or glues for any framing application. (ie.e D&K BufferMount)
    • If your matte print is not framed behind UV protective glass or plexi: consider applying 2-3 even coats of a high quality print fixative spray, like Moab Desert Varnish. Print fixative spray is not recommended for luster and gloss prints, as it will discolor or dull the print.2
  5. Handling:
    • Cotton gloves are strongly recommended.
    • Handle by the white margin only.
    • Do not touch or rub the printed surface. This leads to abrasion or burnishing, especially on matte surfaces, and cannot be repaired.
    • Interleave each print with acid free glassine paper or with a PE / PP slide.

FAQs

How much is a Proofing Session and what can I expect?
Proofing Session: $125 first hour and 2 Proofs. Additional time and prints extra.
A proofing session typically runs about an hour. We use this time to get to know you and your work and for you to get to know us. We’ll discuss the differences between papers and how that choice impacts the print. We’ll also discuss how lighting and framing choices impact the look of your prints and what considerations you need to take into account.

We’ll inspect the work on our monitors to determine if the image is properly calibrated for flawless printing and if needed, we’ll make minor adjustments to refine your vision.

During this session we’ll also narrow in on the type of paper(s) you want to see your work on. We will make a limited number of proofs of one image on up to two papers options. Additional proofs available, as needed, at full cost. The resulting proofs will be printed at 6×9 on your paper choices.3 These will be yours to take with you and to inspect in the various settings they may be displayed in.

In lieu of a Proof Session, we inspect each client supplied file to ensure it will produce a print to the expected quality. If we have any concerns, we will reach out and discuss alternatives or finding a more faithful file to work from. The most common issue we see is a file too small, often saved as a .jpg with high compression, being asked to be printed too large.

To ensure the best outcome, it is best if you send us a .tif image saved at 16bit AdobeRGB color or 2.2 Gray Gamma greyscale. Images should be scaled as large or bigger than the actual print at a minimum of 300 ppi, preferably 360 ppi or greater.

Great results can come from .jpg files saved in sRGB, Dot Grain 20%, or almost any other color / greyscale scheme. We will discuss any concerns we have and troubles we may perceive. We will always work with you to achieve the best print possible from the files you have. Please be aware that issues with client supplied files may slow production and delay shipments as we work out the details over the phone, via email or in person.

Please note, on all orders over $500, prints produced without a proofing session are sold as is.

Do you color correct before printing?
We offer this service as part of our Proofing Session.
To eliminate the headache and frustration felt when your expectations aren’t met due to unsatisfactory prints, we strongly recommend scheduling a Proofing Session. Contact Us to schedule yours today.

Do you offer scanning, photo retouching and digital restoration services?
Yes!
Learn more here: High Resolution Film Scans

Are you able to print on wood, aluminum, canvas, etc
Maybe!
We work with a variety of partners to provide these alternate print solutions. However, since these are not done in-house they may require additional time to fulfill. Contact Us for an estimate.

What dimensions can you print?
Current Max Paper Limit: 24in in one direction.
Current Max Print Limit: 22in in one direction.

We can accommodate a wide range of print sizes from 20x30inches down to as small as 2x2in square. Our current in-house printer can accept up to 24in wide rolls. We have printed as large as 21×64 inches.

We are working to expand our capacity to offer wider paper sizes. If you are in need of prints wider than we can currently accommodate, we welcome you to sign up for our JHS Dispatch to stay informed about when these sizes become available. If your need is immediate, we are happy to provide consultation and accommodations from one of our affiliate partners.

Are you able to print borderless?
Depends.
In most cases we recommend leaving at least a 1/2 inch border around the image for matting and framing purposes. This means the largest 2:3 ratio image (35mm frame) we are currently able to print is approximately 22x33in.

What is your turnaround time?
Depends on the size of your order, current workload and availability of any supplies needed.
In many cases we are able to have your prints ready within a few days to a week.

Will you guarantee my prints will meet my expectations?
Unless you book a proofing session, we cannot offer any guarantees.
Due to differences in paper surfaces and textures, how the ink lays on or soaks into the paper, even the type of lighting used to view a print will impact the experience a person has with it. A proofing session aims to address these kinds of issues before they come up. It’s our best effort to prevent costly print mistakes.

What is your return policy for prints?
Due to the nature of artwork and its inherent values, this is dealt with on a case-by-case basis. In most cases prints are sold as-is and no refunds will be made. Unless you’ve worked with us during a proofing session to perfect your print, we cannot offer any guarantees. In the very rare event a shipment of prints from us to you is damaged, we will ask you to provide images of the damage and may request you to return the order for us to inspect. If we deem the order is as intended no refund will be issued and we will charge you to return the prints back to you. If we deem the order was damaged due to carrier negligence, we will work with our shipping partners to remedy the situation. If the damage was caused by negligence on the receiver’s end to ensure the safety of the artwork once delivered we are unable to offer any solutions.

3What papers do you stock in house?
We stock most Canson-Infinity and Moab papers in house in addition to select Hahnemühle, Epson and Awagami Papers. Some papers are only available on a case-by-case basis by special order. Contact us for more information and to schedule a presentation of papers and surfaces. Special Orders are subject to at least 50% deposit upfront.
