Archival Pigment or Gicleé Printing, What’s the Difference?
The term Gicleé was coined in the 1990’s as a means to describe the emerging form of fine-art printing using InkJet printer technology. At the time, these printers utilized dye-based inks that were prone to early fading and washing out when exposed to humidity and moisture. With the introduction of better technology in recent years, the term gicleé has fallen out of favor by most artists and collectors. However, it is still commonly used to refer to older prints and those made on equipment utilizing dye-based inks.
Jason Houge Studios uses the latest technology and pigment-based inks formulated for long-term archivability and enjoyment. The contemporary term most commonly used to describe a prints made with pigment inks is now “Archival Pigment Print.” These contemporary prints, are lightfast, will not wash out in water and have the added benefits of increased vibrancy and extreme color accuracy. For graphic artists and designers: our prints boast 99% Pantone color accuracy on most papers.

Fine Art Printing Done Right
We provide a personalized and collaborative printing experience. We don’t offer print on demand because we want to know who our clients are and what their needs are. We take time to get to know your needs and what your vision is for the prints we’ll make for you. We offer a free consultation to hear about you and your work to present you with options that will meet your needs. Our workflow is calibrated from capture to print to ensure we are providing the most accurate color and tonal ranges possible on paper. We aim to keep our turn around times short, usually within a week.
The care we take after your prints are made continues by giving the prints a resting period of 24 hours. This ensure the paper surface and inks have a time to cure and stabilize. We interleaf every print with glassine, which provides an acid-free buffer between prints to prevent abrasion. Lastly, we package most works in a poly sleeve to protect them and larger orders are wrapped in Tyvek to protect them from the effects of humidity and moisture.
